GenRug started in Kathmandu with a small team, a tufting gun, and the suspicion that the Nepali rug/carpet industry had been painting the same flowers for too long.
Why GenRug started.
We kept seeing the same thing stunning homes, thoughtful walls, curated shelves and then a completely generic rug in the middle of it all. The one piece of a room that everyone looks down at, and somehow, the one piece nobody cared about. We decided to care.
The gap in the Nepal market.
Nepal has been hand-tufting rugs for the world for decades. Beautiful craft, invisible branding. We're local, we're here, and we're obsessed with bringing that same craft to the people who live on these floors with their characters, their names, their logos.

Every step sketch, design, tufting, carving, binding, finish happens inside our Kathmandu studio. Our tufters are paid fairly, work in daylight, and take their time. The slow way is the only way we know.
